Testimonial by Dr. Sue Lim, EDS Senior Faculty for earning the Ifugao State University’s DBA degree.

A Journey of Persistence, Ridicule and Triumph
By Professor Dr Sue Lim

Congratulation to Dr Sue Lim! You have made it. Cheers!

After having worked for more than 20 years as a human resources practitioner in 4 big multinational organizations, I finally took the bold step of leaving the comforts of a secured job and ventured into the risky world of being on ‘my own boss’.

Two years after I started to work with EDS, its President, Professor Dato Dr. Ben Lee began to encourage me to purse Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree program. I did not see any immediate need to take up a new pursuit as I was fairing very well professionally with just possessing my MBA. Regardless of any valid excuse I bothered to give, Dr. Ben Lee relentlessly raised the issue each time I came to support the MBA class in Penang or whenever we had face to face interaction either in Malaysia or Vietnam. He was persistent as much as I was recalcitrant. One has to give high credit to Dr. Ben for not accepting no as a good answer for something he feels right as he managed to make me realized the importance of pursuing the DBA to acquire new sets of knowledge and to cultivate a research mindset.

Reflecting back now, I wish I had accepted his wise counsel earlier for the following reasons. The journey of doing my Ifugao State University’s DBA was plagued with moments of ridicule initially by my dear supervisor, Prof. Dr. Arivalan, who uttered that he was going to tolerate the haphazard way I presented my below DBA - standard first chapter. With his brilliant guidance, I managed to complete the remaining chapters with relative ease. Prof. Dr. Arivalan taught me the importance of ‘clearing the right path as an enabler to achieving result’ while I learned from Dr. Ben Lee the actual application of sense of persistence.

Happy Moment! Dr. Sue Lim with fellow DBA/PhD graduates.

Equally important was the discovery that one can still learn a lot from passionate teachers who share with and from their heart. Passionate teachers do not just hail from overseas reputable institutions of higher learning; many of them come from university of hard knocks where they lead you to the path of real results. EDS can proudly claim to have this breed of teachers, kudos to Br. Ben Lee for the unique ability in identifying them and retaining them. Despite having many years of working experience, I have been greatly enlightened by the additional new knowledge which I am sharing with fellow learners to add higher value.

Last, but not least, it taught me to be humble that when one opens the mind and be ready to learn , there are many ready teachers around. I am so pleased that I have obtained my DBA and am keenly looking forward to many more years of meaningful contribution to the human capital development in Malaysia and abroad. Long live EDS, its dynamic president Prof. Dato Dr. Ben Lee for enabling me to successfully complete the doctorate.

I would strongly recommend the EDS MBA and DBA/.PhD programs to anyone anywhere who is seeking to learn from passionate facilitators who so freely dispense their wisdom and invaluable life experience. It is the one of those rare places where one shares, contributes and learns simultaneously.

Warmest regards,

Ms. Sue Lim

On 24 March 2012, EDS Business School in alliance with St. Robert International Academy officially launched the Akamai University PhD in Management at Iloilo City, Philippines. Doctoral seminar classes were held on 24-28 March at Smallville 21 Hotel at the Smallville Complex in Iloilo City Philippines.

Twelve of the new doctoral students recently attended the Akamai PhD in Management program seminars. Prof Dr Arivalan Ramaiyah, the conference facilitator stated, "The students were surprised at the very high quality, delivery, support and knowledge of the faculty. Please state the subject that have the most impact on you and explain your reasons.
Honestly speaking, all of the three modules have a very great impact on me and are equally important to me in my job as the president of our institution.

Please share your experience on the city tour / field study and shopping trip.
In shopping, we are able to buy new laptop which is cheaper than in the Philippines.

Any suggestion for improvements?
I have nothing to suggest for improvement because I am very satisfied with how Dr. Ben Lee and his EDS team managed and organized the training / seminar.

Please state briefly what you had benefited from this 6-day program.
During the 6-day program, I had a deeper sense of business administration after gained the understanding of structure of the supply chain and how does it function.

Please state the subject that have the most impact on you and explain your reasons.
Supply Chain Management is the most useful for me this time, since it helps me to understand how company is run, because you can not manage a project / a company without knowing the whole company system.

Please share your experience on the city tour / field study and shopping trip.
From the Penang City Heritage Tour, I sensed the landscape, infrastructure and plants of Penang city. I was amazed by the abundant plant diversities in this area, because I'm from a cold region and life in hot area is a large attractive to me.

Testimonial by Dr. Dang Thi Anh Hong, our new DBA/PhD in Management graduate from Vietnam

Dr. Dang Thi Anh Hong spoke on behalf of the graduate during the Graduation Ceremony.

I started my PhD at EDS Business School in 2010 and successfully defended my thesis in March 2012 with Great Honor/ Merit result. It seems very short time for girl like me on the path of Ph.D but actually it is really many efforts. Ms. LK Tan always ask me: “Where are you on the way go to top of Mountain?” and I replied as usual “ It is still very high, I am just in the Bottom/ Middle of the Mountain, still climbing up…”. And in 12 March, I have told her that “Ms. LK Tan, I am in the top of Mountain now”. Look back 2 years of my research, The Mountain seems very high but it is shorter and shorter after my supervisor approved for me Chapter by Chapter.

Anh Hong pay attention in the class on July 2010.

Choosing to come to EDS Business School was one of the best decisions I have ever made. After 3 months looked for DBA/ PhD distance learning program, I found EDS Business School from information of Thai Nguyen University, right after searching information about EDS, I applied for it as they offered the program without a waiting list and they had very clear schedule for program, which was very convenient to me. More than that, it also offered DBA from Ifugao State University, Philippines.

Anh Hong with fellow students during the July 2010 class

What I liked the most about my experience at EDS was EDS’s team. They made it feel like it was family here. Everybody knew my name and they was really friendly and attentive during the research revision class in Penang.

Successfully completing PhD is the best academic experience and achievement of my life. Thanks to the support and wealth of opportunities provided by EDS I managed to complete my Thesis earlier. Thanks to my supervisor, Professor Dr. Arivalan Ramaiyah, was on hand at all times to provide guidance and support me all the way through my studies.

I am very grateful for the experience, research skills and considerable knowledge that I gained during my time at EDS.

Prof. Dr. Douglass Capogrossi speech at EDS 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner Celebration

Prof. Dr. Douglass Capogrossi speech at EDS 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner Celebration on 12 March 2012 at Vistana Hotel, Penang, Malaysia.

Good evening honored guests, business and education leaders, EDS faculty, students, and alumni.

I am so pleased to be here again in Penang to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the founding of EDS Business School.

I have been associated with EDS and Dr. Ben Lee for nearly ten years. At a time when I was myself addressing the challenges of the founding of Akamai University in Hawaii, USA, during the later months of 2002, I was exploring with the founding members of the Akamai Board the selection of educational affiliations to pursue in Africa, Europe and Asia. One evening at my home, I received a curious telephone contact from a gentleman, Ben Lee, asking for an opportunity to discuss the potential for an affiliation. That was the start of a long series of adventures and the establishment of a number of very powerful associations. Dr. Lee invited me to travel to Malaysia and experience first- hand, the quality of his executive development seminars.

This was a very difficult decision for me, since I had never been to Malaysia, and as a white American man, many of my colleagues cautioned me about making the trip.

Traveling to Malaysia in 2003 to visit the EDS training conference was far more beneficial to me and Akamai University than I could have ever imagined. What I found was a dynamic community of educators, excellent support staff, and an array of students who were genuine leaders from the corporate and business field and NGOs from Malaysia, Vietnam, and other nations in Southeast Asia. These were all quality people who helped to open my eyes and to open my mind about what Akamai University could contribute in partnership with EDS Business School in Asia. Shortly after that first trip to Malaysia, Akamai and EDS began our work together.

Since we began our collaboration, I have personally observed the EDS Team instruct business programs for more than 3,000 students from Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, China and other Southeast Asia nations.

Our organizations have worked together in the creation of world-class programs, namely-- MBA, MBA in HRM, DBA, PhD in Management, and PhD in Educational Leadership. Follow up studies related to the success of the graduates of these programs have revealed that employers find our EDS/Akamai graduates to be well prepared and strong contributors within the workplace, as demonstrated by the numerous promotions of our graduates in recent years.

Together, EDS and Akamai conceived and delivered the International University Leadership Colloquium during 2009 and 2010 bringing more than 100 senior university leaders from ten nations into contact and collaboration.

Further, on a number of occasions, EDS has provided training for PASUC - the Philippines Association of State Universities and Colleges. This success opened EDS to a greater number of friendships and associations among leaders at Philippines universities and colleges, and some of those education leaders are with us here tonight.

As a further result of our associations in Philippines, together with a number of education leaders from the Philippines, Malaysia, USA, Bangladesh, and Macedonia we were able to conceive a grand adventure called the International Distance Education Accreditation League, an innovative international accrediting group for distance education and cross-border higher education. Through these many accomplishments, EDS has shown itself worthy of the great number of training awards it has received since 2004, for quality educational leadership.

My walk with EDS and Dr. Ben Lee has been a long one and at the time of their tenth anniversary, it is my sincere hope that Akamai University has contributed as much value to EDS and we have received from them. It is my wish, on behalf of all of those here with us today, that the EDS Business School continues to even greater heights over its next ten years.
Best wishes to EDS and best wishes to you all…… Thank you.
