For Joint Training Project with Tibetan Entrepreneurs

On 8 - 14 May 2010, through a joint venture of EDS Business School and The Bridge Fund, sixteen Tibetan Entrepreneurs, originating from Tibet, Qinghai, Yunnan, and Sichuan Province in China, participated in a dynamic training program held at B-Suite Hotel in Penang. The Tibetan participants, business owners and managers, attended the training as a consequence of a Bridge Fund training grant awarded to EDS Business School. The grant supported 16 Tibetan entrepreneurs in a week-long EDS business management training in Penang. The mission of the grant was building a stronger network among targeted Tibetan enterprises and international institutions for the advancement of business. On 8 May 2010, the Penang Government hosted a welcoming dinner for the Tibetan Participants.

The Bridge Fund grant is an important element of the EDS Community Service Project, following the EDS mission to share the latest management practices, success ideas, inspiration and insights to help entrepreneurs, intrapreneurs, managers and executives of business organization and non-governmental organizations (NGO) across cultures to enhance competitiveness in today’s challenging business environment. The Advanced Management Program sponsored by EDS presented to the Tibetan Entrepreneurs to improve their operational efficiency, encourage continuous lifelong learning, and support business networking.

The Bridge Fund (TBF) is a nongovernmental, nonprofit charitable organization that provides support for sustainable economic development, environmental conservation and cultural preservation programs in Western China.

The training program included business training modules Creating a World Class Organization , delivered by Associate Professor Loh Wei Hoong; Logistics and Supply Chain Management instructed by Dr Lee Karling; and Change and Crisis Management, presented by Dr Law Yong Hoe, and a: Field Study Tour through Penang Heritage City.

As an alternative to attendance at one of the above training modules, the Tibetan participants were provided the opportunity to attend a seminar on Penang Investment Opportunities especially organized by the InvestPenang.

InvestPenang, established during 2004, is a non-profit entity of the Penang State Government with the sole purpose of promoting investments within Penang. InvestPenang aims to sustain, rejuvenate and further promote business activity through continued investments and at the same time explore profitable new growth areas. InvestPenang is staffed with experienced and capable talent who facilitate investment with unparalleled dedication. In essence, InvestPenang ensures sustainable development by providing information and resources to investors; enhancing Penang’s business friendly environment; strengthening Penang’s competitive edge; promoting investment; supporting growth of existing companies; and facilitating growth of domestic industries.

On Wednesday, 19 May 2010, Dr. Ben Lee, President and Founder of EDS Business School and Honorable Senator Mustafa Kamal, Advisor of EDS Business School were guests of honor at the launching of Jose Rizal - Ho Chi Minh Educational, Cultural, and International Friendship Society at Los Banos Campus, Laguna State Polytechnic University, Philippines. The concept of a friendship society between the Philippines and Vietnam was the social invention of Dr. Ricardo A. Wagan, President of Laguna State Polytechnic University, Philippines.

The Friendship Society was initiated with the hope of promoting and developing a deep appreciation for the language, culture, arts, peace and values of Asian countries, particularly the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and uphold harmony and camaraderie with the people of the Republic of the Philippines, the proposal to establish the Jose Rizal - Ho Chi Minh Educational, Cultural and Friendship Society was conceptualized through cooperation among Laguna State Polytechnic University, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Embassy in the Philippines.

Together with five prominent individu als from Malaysia and Philippines, Dr. Ben Lee was invited to visit Congressman Jose de Venecia, Jr. on Wednesday, 20 May 2010, at his home in South Forbes Park, Makati City, Metro Manila, Philippines. Honorable Congressman Jose Claveria de Venecia, Jr., also known as JDV or Joe De V, is former Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Philippines, serving from 1992 to 1998 and from 2001 to 2008. As Speaker, he was the fourth highest ranking official of the Philippines.

As the special peace envoy for former Philippines President Fidel Valdez Ramos, Speaker de Venecia reached out to insurgent groups, secessionists in Mindanao, the RAM-SFP-YOU military rebels, the Communist Party, and the other dissident groups.

In 1992, de Venecia began secret talks with leaders of the military rebels, which led to a ceasefire in December of that year and a final peace agreement in 1995. In April 1997, de Venecia journeyed to the Netherlands to meet with self-exiled Philippines leaders of the National Democratic Front and New People’s Army. He was the first Christian leader to enter Mindanao’s Camp Abubakar Mountains in November 1997 and open breakthrough peace negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

He crossed Africa’s Sahara Desert twice to meet the Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi and MNLF Chairman Nur Misuari and assisted in forging a peace agreement at Tripoli in 1976. His persuasion of Misuari to accept autonomy led to the signing of the peace pact of September 2, 1996.

On 22 May, Dr. Ben Lee, CEO of EDS Business School was invited to the home of the Philippines most well known educational philanthropist, Dr. Roberto C. Licup, Sr in Candelaria, Quezon, Philippines. Accompanying Dr. Lee were Malaysia Senator Mustafa Kamal, and training specialist, Ismail Yusof.

Dr. Licup has demonstrated a lifetime commitment to advancing access to education for the poorest populations of the Philippines. His footprints as a philanthropist stretch across the nation, where he has donated more than 600 classrooms and more than 30,000 sets of eyeglasses for poor students. Dr. Licup is also an active promoter for the protection and health of the environment of the Philippines. The EDS Team views Dr. Roberto Licup, Sr. as a great living legend; one for all of us to emulate.

The EDS Team sends its congratulations to SLSU President, Dr. Cecelia Gascon for having constructed a wonderfully functional new Administrative Building at the main campus in Lucban, Quezon, Philippines.

The income from this new administrative facility was earned through tuition fees generated from a very successful cross-border collaboration with a foreign university.

Her Excellency, Philippines President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo officiated at the opening of the new administrative center on 15 March 2010.
