Joint SLSU / AHU MBA Program on 27 - 30 March, 2009 in Lucan, Philippines

EDS Senior Faculty, Professor Dr. A. Ramaiyah was assigned to conduct a 4-day Joint American Heritage University (www.amheritageuniv.net) and Southern Luzon State University (www.slsu.edu.ph) MBA Program on 27th to 30th March 2009 at SLSU Main Campus in Lucban, Philippines.

Professor Dr. Arivalan with the MBA students

My experience at Southern Luzon State University- Professor Dr. Arivalan

I reached Clark airport Luzon at about 11.00am, on 26th March, 2009 via Airasia after about 4 hours journey from KL. Upon reaching the airport, Prof. Reynolds was already waiting for me at the Clark airport holding a name tag with my name on it. We quickly got into a four wheeler headed towards Pizza Hut. In the car, Prof Rey told me that he and the driver left Southern Luzon State University (SLSU) to pick me at about 5am in early morning. It took about 5 hours for the Professor to reach the Clark airport. His mission that day was to pick me up from the airport, provide me lunch and send me straight to a comfortable hotel near SLSU.

I was indeed astonished with his dedication, commitment, concern and sacrifice. I belief, this are the things that some of us would never do, traveling 10 hours in a day to just fetch a visitor. I am speechless with the hospitality that I always receive from Philippines. I strongly feel they can teach many part of the world what is hospitality, unselfishness and politeness.

Upon reaching the hotel at about 6.30pm, Prof. Rey quickly arranged for my dinner at the hotel and left home. I was at the Lucban, Queezon visiting SLSU to conduct 4 days lecture for MBA, DBA students and faculties of SLSU.

First two days covered topic on New Venture Creation and another two days on Management of Growing Businesses. Both topics were related to each other and cover in depth about how to create a new venture and manage it smoothly. The class started on 27th March with about 20 students including 4 Vietnamese students from Thai Nguyen University who are pursuing the MBA program at SLSU on fulltime basis. The lecture sessions were very interesting with matured and participative students. Everyone was working very hard to complete and present the cases and discussion questions given in the class.

As a facilitator, I felt the time was running very fast, this is because all of us were enjoying the sessions, giving and sharing inputs on so ideas and opinions. A special lunch was prepared for me due to my vegetarian diet by the staff of SLSU. I am very much indebted to them too. The lunch was cooked specially for me at one of the staff’s home. Everyday different menu and Prof. Reynolds always accompanies me during the lunch time.

On the evening of 27th March, the Honorable President Professor Dr. Cecilia N.Gascon gave me a special dinner treat at the floating restaurant in Lucban with other senior faculty members despite of her busy schedule. The dinner was wonderful, served on a fresh banana leaf. Most of us eat with hand. As said earlier, the hospitality given here was superb, rarely we find in other parts of the world.

Everyone is so eager to learn new things irrespective of age, experience and knowledge. I have the feeling of belongingness to the university because this is where I will be graduating for DBA on 29th April this month.

I am very much grateful to Dr. Ben Lee and Dr. Cecilia N. Gascon for giving me the golden opportunity to complete the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program at this esteemed university of Philippines. I am indeed very much proud to belong to SLSU community which I feel very unique in every sense. This is the place that we can come anytime of the year. The people and the weather are always shining with love and compassion.

American Heritage University in San Bernardino offering 15 full scholarships in paralegal, business administration

Wednesday, March 18, 2009 By JULIE FARREN - The Press-Enterprise

American Heritage University in San Bernardino is helping to make college affordable by offering full scholarships to 15 students interested in becoming paralegals or earning degrees in business administration.

The scholarships total $200,000, said Tony Ogiamien, university president.

This is a new approach for the university, which opened in 2003, he said.

"We felt the need to attract students into our school because we're relatively new in the Inland Empire," said Ogiamien.

American Heritage University serves mid-career adults with geographic, personal or professional time constraints that prevent them from completing their education.

Students can receive classroom instruction or take courses online.

Ogiamien said the scholarships are for Inland residents who want to become paralegals or earn bachelor's or master's degrees in business administration.

Five scholarships will be awarded for paralegals and five each for the bachelor's and master's programs.

The American Heritage University Foundation is providing the scholarships through donations from businesses and individuals, Ogiamien said.

The programs can be completed in 18 months and have good employment potential, he said

Programs will start May 11.

Applicants must legally reside in San Bernardino or Riverside counties, prove financial hardship, furnish three letters of recommendation and proof of community service.

Paralegal applicants must have completed at least 30 units of general education. Applicants for the bachelor's degree must have completed at least 80 units of college credits, and applicants for the master's must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

A Reflection of the 10th EDS International Residential CEO Program from 7th to 13th March in Penang by GK Lim, President of HRD Gateway

Dr. Ben Lee, EDS President & Founder welcome GK Lim to the 10th EDS International Residential CEO Program

I thought I had experienced them all, me being a veteran training consultant. But when I arrived at B-Suite Hotel in the morning of the first day of the EDS Residential CEO/DBA Program, I sensed excitement in the air, something I had never felt before.

The second floor of B-Suite Hotel had the atmosphere of a campus building hallway, people milling around, checking out the lecture rooms they were assigned to.

But this was not the ordinary university students crowd. These people were working adults, coming to “sharpen their saw.” Most looked like they were in their early thirties; others were obviously middle-aged.

And the chatter was in different languages – Vietnamese, Tagalog, Hokkien, Mandarin, and English.

And I saw someone who obviously was from the African continent: I found out later that Ms. Mascelyn Nyangoni is from Zimbabwe.

That morning was the beginning of my exciting journey to my Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program.

In all we were at B-Suite Hotel for seven days, going thru three sessions by three faculty members; each session lasting two full days.

My coursemates were working for their DBA’s, and the quality of discussion was reflective of a high level of maturity of thought. These people are mid to senior managers of their companies, as well as university lecturers and professors. A few were entrepreneurs.

This is indeed a unique educational project involving state and private universities from the Philippines, Vietnam, China, Macedonia and USA, the brainchild of Dr Ben Lee, President & Founder, EDS Advance Academy, an international centre for executives and lifelong learning.

Faculty members as well as students of these universities meet in Penang to learn from and interact with industry professionals who share their experiences thru a series of lectures, case studies and discussion sessions.

On the top of that, participants got to experience industry in action first hand with a visit to the B Braun Medical Industries manufacturing facility.

According to Dr Ben Lee, the next EDS session would be held at Palawan State University in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, Philippines, and after that at universities in Vietnam, China, Macedonia and the USA.

MBA and DBA candidates from all over the world would be able to draw from experiences of faculty members who are themselves industry experts, and in various campuses, interacting with delegates from diverse backgrounds and nationalities.

As for me, this DBA that I am working towards is by far the best educational investment I have made for myself.

Ms. Jasmin L. Vargas introducing herself during the opening session of Professional CEO Program on 7th March 2009.

The 10th EDS Residential CEO/DBA Program gave me a fresh and new perspective in thinking for my university in terms of management and leadership. The topics are very updated and relevant to the times. After this program, I believe I will be more invigorated in my work to make and create value innovation and changes in the "Toyota Way".

The Penang Heritage City tour, study and shopping trip was fun, exciting and tiring. The EDS Staff are wonderful in showing us around and asking for bargain prices for us. The study tour in B.Braun Medical Industries was very interesting and exciting with the "astronaut" suit that I wore to enter the production plant. The city tour was enjoying though the rain "quite" ruined the trip. But generally, the trips were all very good.

Personally, this program is very interesting and relevant. From the time I decided to enroll at EDS, I never regretted my decision. The cost involved is no longer an obstacle because of the benefits compared to cost.
/
The topics - Blue Ocean Strategy, Change & Crisis Management, and the Toyota Way are all excellent topics. The lesson I learned could be readily applied to my workplace in the Philippines - both in the classroom and in the performance of my task as an administrator.
/
I am also happy and appreciate so much the friendly relationship established with the EDS management, lecturers and fellow participants.

I have a very good experiences during the Penang Heritage City tour, study and shopping. I enjoyed the good transport, good views and sceneries, beautiful buildings, low prices of goods (goods on sale) and the warm and friendly attitude of the people. I also value the experience and knowledge I gained from the study visit at B.Braun Medical Industries.

Thanks to EDS for giving this opportunity.

Dear All - EDS team, classmates and residential program mates!

You have given me so many impressive and memorable moments throughout the residential tenure. I enjoyed very much your company everywhere – in the classroom, in the canteen, on the classroom terrace, in all events - either a get-together or an outing. Trust you also enjoyed it as much as I did! I would like to sincerely thank you, EDS team, for your great efforts in putting us under the same roof and shaping us in one goal – the SUCCESS.

We had no chance to choose a friend as we are All Friends. We had no extra energy as all our energy has been put to our Team Works and group activities. We shared our thoughts, our feelings, our smiles and laughs so that everyone brought home the warmest memory of the program. My special thanks to Dr. Pete, the great friend of all of us.

Again, thank you all for the knowledge delivered by the lecturers, for the experiences and the inputs shared by our MBA group and Eagles team.

I miss you all and hope to see you all soon in July.
