EDS visits the Laguna State Polytechnic University, Philippines

Opening Ceremony for the joint EDS & Laguna State Polytechnic University's International Leadership Training at Stanta Cruz Main Campus, Laguna, Philippines on 19 January 2009

Professor Dr. Pete Ooi and myself (Professor Ramaiyah) were assigned a task by our beloved Dr. Ben Lee, President of EDS to conduct leadership seminars at the esteemed Laguna State Polytechnic University (www.lspu.edu.ph). The two topics of the seminar were EQ Leadership which was conducted by Professor Dr. Pete Ooi on 19 and 20 January; and Transformational Leadership by Professor Ramaiyah on 21 and 22 January.

We arrive at the Manila Airport on Sunday, 18 January at about 10.30am greeted by none other than the Honorable Professor Dr. Ricardo A Wagan with his wife Madam Thelma Wagan. We were touched by his enthusiasm and kindness to greet us at the airport which is not the norm in the many parts of the world. Honorable Professor Dr.Ricardo A Wagan is the longest serving university President in Philippines. We were taken to a posh Chinese Restaurant in Mall of Asia for a lunch and briefed to us on our another special agenda of the visit which is the conferment of degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities (Honorary Causa) to Dr. Ben Lee and Doctor of Philosophy in Rural Development (Honorary Causa) to Congressman, Honarable Edgar S. San Luis.

After the lunch, we were sent to the Hot Spring Hotel for rest at about 4.00pm. Later at 5.30pm, we were again picked for a dinner at a famous floating restaurant which serves traditional Philippine cuisines.

Dinner with Honorable Dr Ricardo A. Wagan, President of Laguna State Polytechnic University together with their senior officials including Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors and Assistant Directors.

During the dinner, we were introduced to all the senior officials of the university including Vice Presidents, Deans, Directors and Assistant Directors. During the dinner, Professor Dr. Wagan narrated to us on his experiences of transforming the university to the greater heights to where it is now. His unflinching effort to work tirelessly to the benefits of the students, staff, teachers, and the society are proven trough his excellent track record of placing the university as among the best in the Philippines. He is a mentor to many students, staff and leaders of the Philippines even until now.

During our stay at the university, we noticed how much Professor Dr. Wagan was adored by his fellow academics, administrators, general staff and students. His courage and spirit to lead and transform the people and university is very rare indeed. Above all his position and image in the society we are indeed speechless and amazed with the kind of hospitality and respect he has given to the EDS team. We are very much grateful to the kindness, unconditional love and passion shown to us by the Honorable Professor Dr. Richard A Wagan and his wife and the whole team of distinctive professors.

75 professors and senior faculty from all the campuses (Stanta Cruz, San Pablo, Siniloan and Los Banos) attended the training session.

The joint EDS and LSPU International Leadership Training were attended by seventy five professors from different university campuses. Both seminars received excellent ratings from the participants and they are looking forward to more such seminars in near future under the EDS flagship.

An evening with a Honorable Edward Hagedorn, the Mayor of Puerto Princesa City

City Mayor, Honorable Edward Hagedorn, the Mayor of Puerto Princesa City sharing the development plan of Puerto Princesa City with the participants.

We from EDS team comprise of the Dr. Ben Lee, EDS President and Founder, Professor Dr. Pete Ooi, EDS Chief Operating Officer and myself (Associate Professor A. Ramaiyah) were invited by the Dr. Teresita L. Salva, the President of Palawan State University (PSU) to attend a special dinner for the joint PSU and EDS DBA candidates with the honorable distinctive City Mayor of Puerto Princesa City, Honorable Mr. Edward Hagedorn

Honorable Hagedorn is best recognized as one of the more successful progressive local leaders of the Philippines with his passion and dedication towards the protection of the environment. Hagedorn's leadership is directed towards establishing a harmony between the environment and development. The mayor has established the City of Puerto Princesa as a model of eco-tourism for the country.

We arrive to the Legend Hotel at about 7.00 pm with a group of the joint PSU and EDS's doctoral students who are currently pursuing their DBA program. The students comprise of academics and staff from Palawan State University, Zambales (Central Luzon region, Philippines), Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Penang, Malaysia.

Upon reaching the hotel ball room, we were greeted by the Honorable Mayor with his working uniform with caps on. The first impression he gave us is that he is still working, even after 7 pm. He humbly distributed his name card containing a website address to www.new7wonders.com. This is not a website to promote himself as a City Mayor to others, instead he distributed a card containing a website containing lead to encourage us to vote Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park for new 7th wonders of the nature in the world.

After we sat on the dinner table, he explained the challenges he faced as mayor on transforming Puerto Princesa City as the cleanest city in Philippines. He also briefly explained how he went against the odd to stop the timber logging, cyanide fishing activities and mining activities to protect the nature. Furthermore, he narrated his challenges of getting the Unesco World Heritage Site recognition for the underground river channel within a month which was nearly an impossible task to achieve during his first term of a mayor.

We all knew that 14 February, is a special day for the lovers. The mayor showed us a slide that during this auspicious day he brought 200 newly married couples with their charming wedding costumes to plant mangroves at the coastal area. In his noble effort to bring greeneries to the island, during 12 years of his tenure as a mayor, he has initiated projects for planting 1.4 million trees in the island. This allows him to improve the greeneries in the island by 25%.

As his latest mission, he is planning to introduce electric transport system in the state to reduce the environmental hazards. Other projects which he has done are providing free education to poor, comfortable relocation houses for the deserving, eradication of poverty and etc.

We strongly belief that whatever efforts which were mentioned to us are only a tip of the iceberg on what he has done for the island. Among all his effort, one of the most difficult tasks which he has achieved successfully is transforming the people to accept his noble ideas of protecting the Mother Nature. Now the idea of cleanliness, preservation of green environment and removal of loggings, cyanide fishing and mining is greatly supported by the people of Puerto Princesa City, even if they have to lose their income.

Honorable Mayor has successfully transformed once an unknown island to the recipient of many international awards. We indeed are very proud to have met such a person who goes against all the odds to standby to his principles to safe guard the Mother Nature. We together in EDS team salute him for his success. I personally feel all other leaders should emulate his style of governing a State or a Country. We are very grateful to Dr. Salva, the President of the Palawan State University and other staff who makes this meeting possible. Thank you very much. We will definitely vote for the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park to be the new 7th wonder of the world.

An Enlighten Journey to Palawan State University, Philippines by Associate Professor A. Ramaiyah

I, A. Ramaiyah received the confirmation to conduct a 5-day Doctoral Research Competency Workshop at Palawan State University located at Puerto Princesa City, Philippines from Dr. Ben Lee, the President of EDS while I was in India in the middle of December, 2008.

I accepted the offer happily, took a flight from Penang to Kuala Lumpur at 9.00pm and connecting flight to Manila at 1.30am on Sunday 11th Jan. I waited at the Manila airport about another 3 hours before taking another fight to Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

Upon reaching the airport at about 9.30am, I was greeted by Professor Fe V Ricon, with another two students with two beautiful sea shell garland. After meeting a ever friendly Professor Fe V Ricon, the Vice President of Academic Afairs, all my tiredness due to overnight travelling disappeared immediately.

Before entering the campus, I noticed a big welcoming banner with my name on it. I became speechless with such a gesture of good will. I have traveled nearly half of the world during my previous assignments, but never met people with such high spirits and enthusiasm to welcome and greet guests. The beautiful campus with beautiful landscape and surroundings has more than 15,000 students is located about 20 minutes from the airport.

After reaching the campus, there were another group of students and staff greeted me with the same enthusiasm and kindness. All of them were so gracious, friendly, gentle and accommodating. I was thinking deep inside me that all this happens because of few reasons, and one of the most important reasons could be nothing other than an exemplary leadership portrayed by the one and only the President of Palawan University, Dr. Teresita L. Salva, the President of Palawan State University.

I took about 2 hours rest in a 5 star rated hostel room inside the campus itself. The room is equipped with all brand new amenities including Wi-Fi, TV and everything else as found in the 5 star hotel. The room has a breathtaking sea view too.

At about 12.30pm, joined lunch with Dr. Salva and her family members including her grandaughter from USA. I had a wonderful vegetarian lunch specially prepared for me by the chef and the students. Later I got to know that the hostel is managed by none other than Professor Mary Allyson, the Dean, College of Hospitality Management and Tourism with the help of other faculty members and her tourism students. The service provided is not less that of the five star hotels or maybe better than that.

I am very grateful to Dr.Ben Lee and the Palawan State University faculty members for giving me such a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the loving family of Palawan State University, at least for a week. After this experience, I am certain that this is one place which I want to visit regularly.
